Dow Corning Corporation, a global leader in silicone and silicon-based technology and innovation, can help vehicle manufacturers meet increased fuel-efficiency ratings with proven Molykote® brand Anti-Friction Coatings. These Smart Lubrication™ solutions also contribute to reduced engine wear and noise upon startup.

“Regardless of the world region, today’s automotive industry faces multiple challenges for higher mileage, lower emissions and extended vehicle service intervals,” said Ben Son, Global Automotive Powertrain Systems major market leader for Dow Corning. “Our dry-film anti-friction coatings, efficiently applied on piston skirts and rings, can help OEMs achieve these goals while replacing tin plating and other, more expensive, less effective wear treatments.”

Combined with specialized, high-volume application processes, Molykote Anti-Friction Coatings from Dow Corning bond strongly with ferrous, aluminum and composite-metal surfaces to provide long-term lubricity and improve engine performance. These paintlike materials with submicron-sized particles of solid lubricants:

  • Reduce metal-to-metal friction, engine noise, scuffing and wear.
  • Provide critical engine lubrication during startup when oil splash is unavailable.
  • Aid combustion efficiency to help improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.

Supplied as viscous liquid dispersions of solid lubricants in an organic resin-solvent system, the piston anti-friction coatings can be applied by either spraying or screen-printing. They are cured with heat to form a durable, dry-film lubricating barrier with high load-carrying capacity, lasting fuel and oil resistance, excellent corrosion-prevention and wear-reduction properties, and a typical operating temperature range
from -70° to 380°C (-94° to 716°F).

Molykote Anti-Friction Coatings are proven successful as piston and ring treatments in many automotive markets,” Son said. “Dow Corning offers this innovative technology for improving performance on both gasoline and diesel engines. We can help our customers identify the most effective piston-coating solutions and provide experienced assistance in establishing effective parts cleaning and preparation methods, as well as coating application and curing procedures.”

In addition, Son said, other Molykote® Specialty Lubricants are effective solutions for many more powertrain lubrication requirements involving the engine, transmission, driveline system, and cooling and climate-control systems. These greases, compounds, anti-seize pastes, and dry- and wet-film coatings can increase reliability in most every vehicle system.
